The provision at each key stage is designed to be inclusive and promote learning together with social and emotional growth. Our curriculum is designed to be progressive and well-sequenced to develop our students’ access to opportunities that challenge, engage and raise aspirations of all; it is designed to ensure that our students feel respected and valued, engendering a sense of belonging and pride within their community. It is designed to be fully inclusive and promote effective learning, ensuring students reach their full potential.
- In Year 7, the students are taught in two parallel ability bands, with 5 classes in each band, totalling 10 classes. The students are set, initially, using their KS2 results. Data collection, at Assessment Periods, ensures that movements between sets happen regularly. Within bands, students are also set for the core subjects. For example, a student might be in Set 1 for Maths and set 3 for English.
- Our curriculum is adapted and developed to meet the needs of students with SEND, developing their knowledge and understanding so that they can apply what they know with increasing fluency and independence. Indeed, each band also has a small nurture group with approximately 12 students; this is designed to reflect the nature of primary school since the students are taught by one teacher, in one teaching base. The students do receive specialist teaching for some subjects, namely P.E. and Technology. The rationale behind this is to support our vulnerable and SEND students, ensuring a successful transition from primary to secondary school.
- Our school aim is to have the EBacc at the heart of our curriculum. At Boldon, we provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all students at KS3, ensuring they receive their full entitlement to the National Curriculum.
- In Years 10 and 11, we offer a broad and ambitious range of vocational and academic subjects, offering over 20 option subjects, including: Art, Fashion, Business, Hairdressing, Statistics, Photography, Music and Engineering.
- All students have the opportunity to follow an EBacc pathway, where appropriate, serving to provide secure academic foundations for our young people; the aim is to equip them with the essential skills needed to access a range of careers. All students are given the opportunity to study a modern foreign language and have two free choices.
- Students who do not study a foreign language will instead have an extra History or Geography lesson per week as well as an extra option choice lesson . Pathways are very fluid, allowing students the flexibility of option choices, enabling students to achieve their full potential.
- Each Faculty embeds our RAISE values; this is supported by incorporating the fundamental values of resilience, being ambitious, showing integrity, developing self-discovery and displaying empathy.
- The curriculum is regularly reviewed to ensure that any updates to the National Curriculum are covered and the views of the students, parents and staff are considered.
We have a two week timetable.
