Foreword

Opening quoteAs I have only been in charge of Year 10 since September it seemed sensible to ask Year 10 students how they would describe the year group:

Year 10: Obviously we are the most intelligent students in the school, and definitely the tops when it comes to being, looking and acting cool.

Mrs Newby: What do you most enjoy about school?

Year 10: Seeing our mates so that we can catch up on the latest gossip and plan our evening and weekend social lives.

Mrs Newby: Apart from chatting with your mates what else have you enjoyed most during this year?

Year 10: The visit to Warkworth Castle and PE which is really good this year as we have far more activities to chose from e.g. – rock climbing, aerobics and steps.

Mrs Newby: It would be good if someone could mention something about lessons and work; seeing as that’s primarily why you’re supposed to be here.

Year 10: Oh, yeah well we do a bit of that, when pushed.

Mrs Newby: What are you most looking forward to doing in Year 11?

Year 10: The Prom

In order to correct this skewed image that Year 10 is just one huge social club, I feel that I should make to the following points:

  • All Year 10 students have been made aware of their predicted grades.
  • Many parents have been informed as to how their children’s grades could be improved.
  • We are implementing and developing other strategies to maximise GCSE potential.
  • Miss Knox is constantly seeking to update our pastoral programme in order to foster community aware citizens with high self-esteem who can make informed decisions for themselves.
  • Year 10 students are piloting an accredited SRE course which recently involved some of them being interviewed for Radio 5 breakfast programme.
  • Year 10 has some 20 students involved in a work-related course which means that they spend 1 day a week on a work placement and a 2nd day is spent on vocational training at a variety of venues.
  • All Year 10 students will shortly be involved in a 2 week work experience.

I would like to conclude on a personal note by thanking the Year 10 pastoral team, students and parents for making the last few months such a positive experience. I am really looking forward to taking the group through Year 11 and of course, the Prom – a final note for parents on the subject of the latter – START SAVING NOW!Closing quote
