Ranger Outpost - Student & Staff Remote Access

Boldon School is now a Ranger Outpost enabled site. This means that all Staff and students can access their work from their home drives (S:\ Drives), Student and Staff Central Resources, and they can also submit homework and assignments directly to their subject teachers. (Not yet available)

Information on how to do this, and procedures for setting up the Ranger Outpost client on your home PC can be found in the user manual below. Please get permission from your parents before you Install any software onto your home PC's.

Once you have read all the prerequisites, you will then have to install the client.

Download the User Manual

You can download a copy of the Ranger Outpost Client Manual below. Please ensure you read this Manual, plus the supplementary information below.

Pre-Requisites, Firewall Checks & Configuration Info

In order for you to access your files using Ranger from your home PC, you will firstly need to install the Ranger Outpost client software, which you can download below. The Ranger Outpost client is compatible with Windows 95 and above.

Once you have configured the Ranger Outpost software on your PC, if you are running a Software or Hardware firewall on your system, you will need to ensure you have opened a specific port number (15987 TCP) to allow your PC to communicate with the School Network. Most routers and firewall's should allow this by default, however, if you have installed a 3rd party firewall which restricts this port (software or hardware based), you will need to add a rule. See your manufacturers guide on how to do this if required.

If you are running Windows XP SP1 or SP2, it is likely you will have the built-in Windows firewall activated. You may have to add a rule in Windows Firewall for the specified port, otherwise, you will be unable to connect to the School's network using the Ranger Outpost Client.

To do this, go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Select the appropriate connection object (either Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection), right click and select properties > Select the Advanced Tab at the top > Click the Settings button next to where it says Windows Firewall.

Next, in the Windows Firewall Screen, select the Exceptions tab at the top, and now click add port. Enter Ranger Outpost as the rule name, and enter the port 15987 into the port number field. Make sure you tick TCP,then Click Ok.

You have now successfully added a rule for Ranger Outpost in Windows Firewall. Again, if you are using another Firewall Client, please see the manufacturers guide for adding port or application rules. Application rules are the same as port rules, only the firewall program will calculate the port number for you. Application rules require you to only specify the application name and path -

Example C:\Program Files\Ranger Outpost\Ranger.exe

Pre-Requisites, Firewall Checks & Configuration Info

Once you have installed the Ranger Outpost software on your PC, simply launch the Ranger Outpost Client. You can do this from either the desktop shortcut which the install would have created for you, or, from Start > Programs > Ranger Outpost > Ranger Outpost

When you are prompted by the Ranger Outpost Client, you must enter your School Network username and password. If you do not know your login details, or have forgotten it, you must visit the ICT Support to have your account reset. If you suspect another Student knows your password, it is your responsibility to have your password changed as soon as possible. The more complex your password, the less chance of someone else guessing it.

Use of the School's Network it subject to the Computer Misuse Act 1990, and The Boldon School Acceptable Usage Policy.
