Year 10 students have embarked on a 2 year programme of both GCSE and BTEC courses. These courses are delivered both in house at Boldon School and through our close partners South Tyneside College. Courses as diverse as BTEC Horsecare, BTEC Hair and Beauty, BTEC Construction, BTEC Engineering and Duke of Edinburgh Award are delivered alongside more academic GCSE courses such as GCSE Design and Technology, GCSE Art and GCSE Music. Underpinning these courses are the core subjects of GCSE English, Maths, Science and ICT.
Complimenting their option subjects all year 10 students follow a structured course in pastoral lessons which will prepare them for life after Boldon School and offer them the opportunity to gain accredited qualifications in ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness and BTEC Workskills.
All form tutors pick up their form class in year 7 and follow them through the 5 years full life cycle at Boldon School. Consequently all the year 10 tutors have built up excellent relationship with both their tutees and parents. This is a huge support tool and is central to the success of the care and support offered to all students in year 10.
Students continue to receive positive merits and rewards from both subject areas and pastoral tutors. These merits are built up over the 2 years in key stage 4 and contribute towards students’ qualification to attend the end of year 11 Prom. This is valued extremely highly by all year 10 students and acts as an excellent incentive for all students to work consistently hard at all times.
As with all year groups year 10 have their own breakout area where they can gather before school and at break and lunchtime. Year 10 value this and gives them independence and a sense of purpose. Based in this area is the year 10 pastoral office where the Director of Learning and Assistant Director of Learning are readily accessible for all students to speak to whatever the topic may be.
